Conervation of an experimental brass alloy by American-Intalian artist Harry Bertoia of unknown compsition and method of application. The original material was analyzed at a laboratory specializing in the investigation of metal. The findings enabled us to discern patina and soiling and allowed for a deliberate and selective removal and reduction of unwanted elements.
As a result, some of the original sheen became visible while at the same time patina and traces of age were preserved.
Thorough research, testplates and anaylsis in preparation for the treatment.
Small test areas to check the effect of solvents on possible old protective coatings.
Removal of soiling after gentle brushing.
Melting in a reversible coating to saturate and protect the surface.
Soiled and degraded surface with old cleaning attempts is matte and inhomogeneous prior to treatment.
Surface after cleaning, consolidation, local corrosion protection regained some of its original sheen, is saturated by a sealed by a coating.
